Quick answer
What ingredients should a good glutathione cream have? Glutathione works best alongside other brightening ingredients like vitamin C, kojic acid, arbutin or niacinamide, which act on pigment in different ways. Nourishing oils such as jojoba and avocado help skin stay soft overnight. Always check the full ingredient list and patch test.
Most glutathione creams contain much more than glutathione. Knowing what each ingredient does helps you choose well and understand what to expect. We use our own cream, Glutanex, as a worked example because we know exactly what’s in it, and we’re honest about how strong the evidence is for each ingredient.
The brightening team
| Ingredient | What it does | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Glutathione | Antioxidant; may shift melanin towards a lighter type | 🟡 Small studies, modest results |
| Vitamin C | Antioxidant; helps even out tone; works with glutathione | ✅ Well studied |
| Kojic acid | Slows tyrosinase, the enzyme that makes melanin | ✅ Widely used; can irritate sensitive skin |
| Arbutin | A plant-derived brightener that also slows tyrosinase | ✅ Widely used and generally gentle |
| Mulberry extract | Contains compounds that slow melanin production in lab studies | 🟡 Mostly lab evidence |
Because these work at different steps of pigment formation, combining them is common. Compare: glutathione vs kojic acid · glutathione vs vitamin C · glutathione vs niacinamide.
Traditional Indian ingredients
| Ingredient | Traditional use | What research says |
|---|---|---|
| Turmeric (curcumin) | Haldi for glow, especially before weddings | 🟡 Antioxidant and soothing in lab studies; limited skin trials |
| Saffron (kesar) | Radiance and even tone | 🟡 Antioxidant; a few small studies |
| Sandalwood oil | Cooling and soothing | 🟡 Soothing properties; natural fragrance can sensitise some skin |
| Neem | Clear, blemish-free skin | 🟡 Antibacterial in lab studies |
Nourishing and soothing ingredients
- Jojoba oil: similar to the skin’s natural oils; softens without feeling heavy, and naturally contains vitamin E.
- Avocado oil: rich in fatty acids and vitamin E; helps dry skin overnight.
- Green tea extract: polyphenols with antioxidant and calming effects.
- Calendula: a traditional soothing botanical for sensitive skin.
- Beeswax and honey: beeswax locks in moisture; honey draws water into the skin.
- Zinc oxide: a gentle mineral that soothes. In a night cream it isn’t there for sun protection, so still use a separate sunscreen by day.
What to watch for
- Sensitive skin: kojic acid and natural fragrances such as sandalwood can irritate. Patch test for 24–48 hours.
- Acne-prone skin: rich oils and beeswax can feel heavy. Use a thin layer.
- Nut or plant allergies: read the full list carefully.
- Ingredients to avoid entirely: steroids (such as clobetasol) and mercury in unlabelled “fairness” creams. See how to spot fakes.
How to read an ingredient list
- Ingredients are listed from most to least.
- Look for glutathione and at least one supporting brightener.
- Check for fragrance if your skin is sensitive.
- Make sure the pack shows the manufacturer’s details, batch number and expiry.
