The safest places to buy

1. The brand’s official website. Products come straight from the company, and you have a clear point of contact if something is wrong.
2. The brand’s official store on Amazon or Flipkart. Check the “Sold by” name and look for a “Visit the [brand] Store” link.
3. Trusted pharmacies and large beauty retailers that buy directly from brands or authorised distributors.

Buying on Amazon and Flipkart: what to check

• Seller name: is it the brand or an authorised seller? A random seller with few ratings is a risk.
• Seller rating and reviews: read the 1-star reviews for words like “fake,” “different smell” or “no seal.”
• Price: a price far below the usual MRP is the biggest warning sign.
• Photos: compare the listing’s photos with the brand’s official website.

What must be printed on a genuine pack

Packaged products sold in India must carry key details on the label. Check for:

• The name and address of the manufacturer, or of the importer for imported products
• Net quantity (for example, 30 g)
• MRP, inclusive of all taxes
• Manufacturing date and expiry date (or “best before”)
• A batch or lot number
• A full ingredient list
• Customer care details: a phone number or email

If any of these are missing, don’t use the product.

Red flags that point to a fake

• A broken or missing seal, or a tub that looks used
• Spelling mistakes or blurry printing on the box
• A different colour, smell or texture from your last genuine pack
• Sold loose, in plain jars, or only through Instagram DMs with no business details
• Claims like “fair in 7 days,” “permanent whitening” or “100% guaranteed”
• Very fast, dramatic lightening, which can be a sign of steroids. Stop using the product and see a dermatologist.

2. Take photos of the pack, batch number and invoice.
3. Contact the brand’s customer care to check the batch.
