Dark circles are one of the most common skin complaints in India. Whether glutathione can help depends entirely on what’s causing them.
The 4 main causes of dark circles
| Type | What it looks like | Cause |
|---|---|---|
| Pigmented | Brown | Extra melanin, sun, rubbing, genetics |
| Vascular | Bluish or purple | Thin skin showing blood vessels, poor sleep |
| Structural | Shadow under the eye | Hollows, puffiness, ageing |
| Mixed | A combination | More than one of the above |
Quick test: gently stretch the skin under your eye. If the darkness fades, it’s likely vascular or structural. If it stays brown, it’s likely pigmented.
Where glutathione may help
Glutathione, as a brightening antioxidant, may help mainly with pigmented (brown) dark circles over time. It won’t fix hollows, puffiness or visible blood vessels.
Use caution near the eyes
The under-eye skin is very thin and sensitive.
- Check the label. Only use a product near your eyes if it’s suitable for the eye area
- Never apply inside the lash line or on the eyelids
- Use a tiny amount and pat, don’t rub
- Stop if you get stinging, redness or watering
- Face creams with kojic acid or strong actives may be too harsh for the under-eye area. A dedicated eye cream is often a better choice.
Habits that make the biggest difference
- Sleep 7–8 hours
- Stop rubbing your eyes (a major cause of brown circles, especially with allergies)
- Treat allergies and a blocked nose
- Sunscreen and sunglasses outdoors
- Stay hydrated and reduce salty foods at night (for puffiness)
- Cold compress in the morning for puffiness
When to see a doctor
If dark circles appear suddenly, are only on one side, or come with swelling or itching, get them checked. Deep hollows and stubborn pigmentation can be treated by a dermatologist.
The bottom line
Glutathione may gently help brown, pigmented dark circles over time, but it won’t fix hollows or vascular circles. Be very careful with any product near the eyes, and focus on sleep, sun protection and not rubbing. See also glutathione for pigmentation.
